What changes the price
- Diameter and root spread
- A wide root plate takes much longer to grind than the visible stump suggests.
- Access
- Steps, narrow side paths and raised beds mean carrying the portable grinder in by hand, which takes longer than rolling a machine across an open lawn.
- Grind depth
- Turfing over needs 150–300mm. Replanting in the same spot needs deeper, up to approximately 600mm.
- Stump hardness
- Dense hardwoods and old, dried-out stumps take longer to grind than fresh softwood.
How to pay less
- Get every stump done in one visit, so extra stumps start from about $80 each.
- Keep the mulch and spread it on your garden beds instead of buying more.
- Clear pots, furniture and toys from the path to the stump before we arrive.
- If you already have the chainsaw out, cut the stump low.
- Team up with a neighbour: two properties, one visit.
Pricing questions
How much does stump grinding cost in the Eastern Bays and East Auckland?
Most single residential stumps in the Eastern Bays and East Auckland cost between $150 and $350, and very large stumps run $400–$650 or more. Prices include GST. The price depends on the stump’s diameter, root spread, the depth needed and the access. You get a fixed quote before we start, so there are no hourly surprises.
How deep do you grind the stump?
For turf or lawn, 150–300mm below soil level is usually enough. If you want to replant in the same spot, we can grind to approximately 600mm, where site conditions allow. Tell us what’s going in afterwards and we’ll grind to suit. A shallower grind can cost less.
Do I need to remove the stump, or can I just leave it?
You can leave it, but a stump blocks any future paving, fencing, turf or planting in that spot, and it’s a trip hazard on a lawn. Grinding it out clears the ground so your next project can go ahead.
Can you get into a small back yard?
Yes. Our portable Alpine Magnum weighs about 40kg and is carried in by hand, through narrow gates, up and down steps and into raised beds. Hard access can add time to the job, so let us know about it when you ask for a quote.
Planning your stump removal?
Our planning guide covers access, grinding depth, underground services and what happens to the mulch, plus when grinding is better than digging the stump out.
