Stump grinding or digging out?
There are two ways to get rid of a stump. Digging it out means excavating the stump and its main roots, which leaves a large hole and usually needs heavy machinery. Stump grinding chips the stump away below ground level where it stands, leaving a mix of wood chips and soil. Grinding is quicker and causes far less damage to the lawn and garden around it, which is why most homeowners choose it. How stump grinding works.
1. Decide what the space is for
Are you replacing the lawn, planting a new garden or getting ready for paving? Tell us when you ask for a quote. Grinding to approximately 600mm lets you replant in the same spot. If you’re only turfing over it, a shallower grind may be all you need, and that can cost less.
2. Describe how we can reach the stump
Measure the narrowest point on the way to the stump and mention any stairs, slopes or raised garden beds. Our portable grinder fits places larger machines can’t, but we still need to plan the route. Difficult-access stump removal.

3. Identify nearby obstacles and underground services
Point out fences, paving, retaining walls and any pipes, cables or irrigation you know about. Most service pipes are well below normal grinding depth, but we rely on your knowledge of the property, so say so if you’re unsure.
4. Include all the stumps and roots
A hedge line, bamboo roots or several tree stumps can mean more work than the stump you noticed first. Tell us roughly how many there are and how big, so the quote covers the whole job. Hedge stump and bamboo root removal.
5. Plan where the mulch will go
Grinding leaves mulch-like material. Most of it is usually raked back into the hole and the rest can go on your gardens. We don’t offer a mulch removal service, so think about where any extra can be spread, such as garden beds or under hedges.
6. Prepare on the day
Clear a path to the stump, move vehicles, pot plants and outdoor furniture, and keep pets and children inside while the machine is running. You don’t need to be home while we work. Have more questions? See the stump grinding FAQs or what affects the price.
